Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus “onychomycosis” is a very common condition, affecting one in ten Canadians. It is estimated that half the population will have at least one infected toe during the course of their lifetime. Until recently, toenail fungus was treated with oral pills & topical therapies. Topical therapies are minimally effective & oral pills can be very damaging to the liver. Fortunately, lasers have been gaining popularity for their fast-acting results and safety. Treatments are mostly painless, and require about 10 – 20 minutes of treatment time.

Tiny laser pulses travel through the nail, targeting the fungus beneath it and the heat irradiates the fungus without damaging the skin or nail. Patients come in, spend between 10 and 20 minutes with a laser technician and walk out with no downtime or pain. Often two sessions plus a follow-up is enough to eliminate the problem. As the nail grows out, the new nail should be clear of fungus.
